Missions Frontier supports and helps to facilitate several local schools (Royal Academy School, El Camino Bilingual School, and Upthegrove, Hays, and Duke Christian School.)
The Upthegrove, Hays and Duke Christian School is a private Christian School in Chichicastenango with a student body of almost 200 children (pre-k through 9th grade). Classes include English and Bible. The average cost per child is $250/year. Student scholarships are obtained through United States sponsors. The First Presbyterian Church of North Palm Beach has mainly funded this school with the hopes that the school would eventually be self-sustaining. The School is owned by the Primitive Methodist Church in Guatemala. The school is run by a governing board consisting of individuals both from the United States and Guatemala. Matt Capehart is the President/CEO of the Upthegrove Hays and Duke Christian School. The director of the school is responsible for the day to day operations of the school and carrying out the goals of school as determined by the governing school board, meeting the educational requirements as dictated by the Guatemalan Ministry of Education, and providing leadership and overseeing teachers, staff and students.
The El Camino Bilingual School is a private bilingual Christian School located on the property of Hotel Casa del Rey. Currently the school educates children from pre-k through 3rd grade. A grade level is added each year. El Camino is a unique program in Chichicastenango in both the quality of education and in the curriculum. The students actively learn both English and Spanish. They are also offered classes in karate, computer, Bible and swimming. The school utilizes a hands on teaching approach and has a low teacher student ratio. The school is relatively more expensive than other schools in Chichi. The students who attend the El Camino School are of average income. The typical parent however who sends their child to the El Camino School tends to place a greater value on education and is therefore willing to spend more on tuition. Some financial scholarships are granted which are based on academic performance, parent participation, and economic need. The El Camino School is governed by a board of Directors. Matt Capehart is the co-founder and president of the board. The director of the school is responsible for the day to day operations of the school and carrying out the goals of school as determined by the governing school board, meeting the educational requirements as dictated by the Guatemalan Ministry of Education, and providing leadership and overseeing teachers, staff and students.
The Royal Academy is a private college preperatory school located on the property of the Hotel Casa del Rey and serves the children of the Americans serving in the Chichicastenango area. The students are taught by volunteers who have been licensed and trained as teachers in the United States. Heather Logan is the administrator of Education and is responsible for overseeing Royal academy and structuring a college preparatory, Christian based program that meets the individual needs of the students and is in accordance with the United States school systems.
